j ai lu qu il etait recommandé d effectuer cette opération pour faciliter le demarrage, eviter les cliquetis etc...
est ce indispensable?

les 490 on ete classé dans les 10 pires motos produites par Dirtbike magazine à cause de ça, c'est d'ailleurs marrant le 465 n'a pas autant le probleme, le IT 490 idem l YZ. pour les detonations , c'est un peu pareille, pleins de solutions (1 TOUS LES ANS) mais rien de tres efficace, mais on s'y fait apres un certain temps.
pour revenir au demarrage, carla sur son OW avait une methode : coucher la moto , à faire couler le carbu, puis la redresser gaz couper, starter, un coup de kick à te decoller la semelle de ta sidi...et ça marche aussi sur 490 client 🤭
le cliquetis ca bouffe pas les bords de pistons? 😉

I just bought a 1982 yz490 and 1978 yz400 for $500 for both local seller garage sale. Was it a good deal? I think so. I never owned a yz490 but remember always reading great things about them in the dirt bike magazines when I was a kid. I never heard of thing pinging problem until lately, reading up on the net. It is believable. I think couldn't a person retard the timing a little bit like you would on a car engine to reduce pinging? I know that too much ignition advance can cause pinging. Also, I do believe that l saw a thicker head gasket that supposedly lowers compression ever so slightly helps out. Even if it needs some work, I'm glad I bought it because that is half the fun of fixing up these old bikes. Its like buying an old 65 mustang or something that needs some TLC. Labor of love I suppose? My brother wouldn't have the patience for things like this but I always have.

I know that the yz465 and yz490 parts interchange pretty often, from what I read Don't Ask column by Rick Siemen, the yz465 didn't have these pinging, tuning issues of the yz490 because yamaha gave the yz490 a different combustion chamber. I am getting that you could bolt a yz465 top end onto the yz490 case and solve the problems pretty easy. I think the yz490 had a slightly longer stroke though, so maybe just the cylinder head. because shorter cylinder would cause some problems. I would like to hear what others think of this idea. I just personally don't really know how the shape of a combustion chamber can make so much difference in an engine.

I suppose yamaha was trying to tweak every bit of power out of the thing. I recently read many comments that the carbs were supposedly hard to get jetted right and would run lean at one rpm and rich in another. Also, with climate changes, you would have to rejet often to keep them running right and if you went to lean, they tended to seize up. I believe with cars, lean condition and high compression and hot engine usually leads to major pinging or detonation, so I'm guessing that lean condition is probably the most common cause of pinging with these yz490's. Getting the carb properly jetted and tuned would probably help alot with the pinging and reduce siezing.

Next to Last idea I have to solve any running/tuning issues with my yz490 project bike is the spark enhancer product called the i-CAT which plugs inline between your coil and the spark plug. Supposedly it increased the duration of the spark and helps to reduce misfiring. Supposedly helps alot with engines that are slightly out of tune - too rich or too lean etc. Reduces plug fouling I think too? I would like to hear some feedback on this product as far as authenticity and also whether it would help with the yz490 pinging/tuning issues.
OH FORGOT TO MENTION ONE VERY LAST THING: I have heard that an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) Sensor w/ Gauge is extremely helpful in keeping your bike tuned and jetted ideally. I think anyone having problems tuning their yz490 engine and trying to get it jetted right and eliminate pinging etc should install one of them. I think you can buy a cheap one for about $25 these days. Probably well worth it! Also, dented exhaust pipe can be popped out with air pressure plug the ends and attach compressed air hose, then heat dented areas with a propane torch.

Bonsoir, de celles que je peux voir dans des épreuves, il n'y a pas de problème notable au démarrage à froid et à chaud.
Par-contre, il faut vérifier l'état de l'allumage : trace d'humidité, d'oxydation, boues . . . Ne pas hésiter à le démonter pour contrôler, bien le caler. Et surtout aussi avoir une carburation bien réglé et là aussi un carburateur en état . . .
